City, County Eager for VAAP Handover

Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press -- 9/22/00
The Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press reported that the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County are poised to purchase 940 acres of the 6,350-acre Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP) for $7.5 million. The purchase is scheduled for completion on October 3, 2000, and, according to the article, the City and County are eager to move forward with economic development initiatives for the tract. According to the article, Chattanooga Mayor, Jon Kinsey, and Hamilton County Executive, Claude Ramsey, have jointly expressed interest in attracting a large suitor, which could include a computer firm or an automobile manufacturer. Once purchased, the 940 acres will be planned to accommodate commercial and industrial uses, but contamination issues will need to be addressed for approximately 40 percent of the site, according to the article. As the Army continues with cleanup efforts on the entire plant property, the City and County have expressed their intention to acquire additional portions of VAAP in the future, according to the article.
