The Tennessee chapters are currently focused on the following conservation issues:End Mountaintop Removal (MTR) which is devastating hundreds of square miles of Appalachia, polluting the headwaters of rivers that provide drinking water to millions of Americans and destroying a distinctly American culture that has endured for generations.Cherokee National Forest and the expansion of its wilderness.Kilowatt Ours which is a documentary film by Jeff Barrie that explores the connection between our energy consumption and problems like air pollution in our cities, haze in the Smoky Mountains, mountaintop removal coal mining, nuclear waste and global warming.Tennessee Water Sentinels to educate and advocate for the protection of local streams and rivers and work with local, state and federal water pollution control agencies to insure that ordinances and laws are enforced and polluters are held accountable for their actions.The national Sierra Club has been around since 1892 and is the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization currently in the United States.So if you want to align yourself with a powerhouse that has national presence while focusing on issues that are close to home, the Sierra Club might just be the choice for you.
