Bicycle Trails

Mountain biking is allowed on the multi-use fire trails. (There are miles of fire trails that are multi-use (bike, horse, and off road vehicle). The trails are dirt or gravel with varying terrain.)

Boating

All types of boats and water recreation vehicles are allowed at Pin Oak Lake. Natchez Trace is home to 4 lakes:

Cub Lake has a swimming area, jonboats and pedal boats. Boats are available for rent between Memorial Day and Labor Day. There is no permit required for this lake.

Pin Oak Lake offers boating, fishing, picnicking, swimming, R.V. camping and more. There are two boat ramps available and Lake use permits can be purchased at Pin Oak Lodge. No permit is required for overnight guests.

Browns Lake and Maples Lake have one boat ramp each. jonboats, life jackets and paddles are available on a first-come first-serve basis. Permits are sold on site.

Paddle boats are available seasonally on Cub Lake.

Water Skiing is allowed only on Pin Oak Lake.

Boat ramps are not handicap accessible, but the boat docks are.

Tennessee Boating Regulations

Fishing

Fishing is one of the favorite activities at Natchez Trace, and anglers have four lakes from which to choose. Fifty-eight acre Cub Lake and 690-acre Pin Oak Lake are operated by the Parks Division. Ninety-acre Maple Creek Lake and 167-acre Brown's Creek Lake are operated by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Catches include bluegill, catfish, crappie, largemouth, rock and hybrid bass. A park lake use permit is required on Pin Oak Lake, and persons over 16 years of age must also possess a valid temporary or annual Tennessee fishing license. Rowboats and pedal boats are available for rent at the park dock on Cub Lake. Personally owned boats and motors are permitted on all lakes except Cub Lake.

Hiking

13.5 miles of hiking trails, ranging from 1/2 mile up to 4 1/2 miles, meander through the forest and fields and along the lakeshores and streams of Natchez Park. Contact the park for more information. Overnight camping is allowed on backpacking trails only. The backpacking trail is 40 miles. A Backcountry camping permit is required.

Horseback Riding

Natchez Trace Wrangler Camp
The camp is located 2.2 miles south of I-40 on Hwy. 114. The Bucksnort Wrangler Camp features 65 campsites with full hook-ups, two bathhouses and a dump station. All electrical hook-ups are 50 amps. Each site has a picnic table, ground grill, pedestal grill, lantern holder, water and hitching rail. There are 250 miles of riding trails on the South end of the park. Campsites are first come, first served. Campers are requested to leave site clear of horse waste. No alcohol is allowed and pets must be kept on a leash. Quiet time is at 10 pm.

Equestrian Center
The Equestrian Center is open from early March to late November and is located inside the Natchez Trace State Park 2.5 miles from Exit 116 off I-40.

Guided Trail Rides
Horseback riding at NTEC is a must-do on your visit to our area. Our gentle horses and friendly wranglers eagerly await your arrival! Children as young as 8 years old can trail ride. All of our rides are guided for the safety of our guests and for the health of our horses. We are not able to double and we have a 250 pound weight limit.

Reservations are highly recommended. Come to ride or come to visit, everyone is welcome. We accept cash or check.

Children as young as 3 can enjoy a pony-style ride as they are led around the barnyard by one of our friendly wranglers. Pony-style riders receive a free souvenir cowboy hat.

Overnight Boarding
15 stalls are available for overnight boarding. The cost is $10 per stall, per night. A current negative Coggins is required. Horse owners are responsible for horse care and stall cleaning. Shavings are required and available for purchase if desired. There is a $10 cleaning deposit per stall.

Hunting

Hunting is allowed, in season, with the proper license.

Museum

A newly renovated museum is located within Park Headquarters. Exhibits include local and park history as well as a nature center featuring a wildlife viewing area, interactive computer and aquarium.

Picnic Facilities

Numerous picnic sites with tables and grills are scattered among the tall pines and hardwoods of Natchez Trace. All sites are conveniently located near restrooms, water fountains, and playgrounds. There are four picnic shelters in the park and each will accommodate 30-50 people. Grills and tables are provided. There are two shelters located on Cub Lake and two shelters on Pin Oak Lake.

Picnic supplies, beverages and ice may be purchased at the park store.

Planned Programs

Natchez Trace State Park offers a variety of natural, historic, recreational, and cultural programs. Visitors can enjoy programs such as hikes, bird of prey demonstrations, wildlife programs, history programs on the Trace, hayrides and much more. Most of our programs are offered year round. We do have favorite or most requested programs that are done on a regular basis, but we can also customize programs to meet the needs of special groups, events or special requests. Fees are not normally charged for our programs. Contact the park for more information.

Natchez Trace also has a year around program called the Outdoor Classroom. For more information on programs contact the Interpretive Specialist at (731) 968-3742.

Playgrounds and Sports Fields

Activities to enjoy at the park include archery, basketball, horseshoes, ping-pong, firing range, softball, tennis, volleyball, board games (no electronic games), playgrounds and horseback riding.

Games may be checked out at Pin Oak Lodge. Free for guests. Sports equipment is not available.

There are several playgrounds located throughout the park. There is 1 day use playground at Cub Lake, 1 playground in each campground, 1 playground in the Cub Lake cabin area, and 1 playground at Pin Oak Lodge.

Archery
Archery is available for free, but you must bring your own equipment.

Basketball
Basketball courts are available at the 5 Points Group Camp, at Pin Oak Shelter 2 and at the Cub Lake Recreation Lodge. These are not lighted.

Horseshoes
Horseshoes can be played at the at Campground #1.

Softball
Please bring your own softball equipment, and be aware that there are no lights on the softball field.

Tennis
There is a lighted tennis court at the Pin Oak Lodge.

Volleyball
There are 2 sand courts at Cub Lake Beach.

Swimming

A pool is located at Pin Oak Lodge. The unheated pool is for inn and cabin guests only and is open Memorial Day thru Labor Day. The pool at the inn is handicap accessible. A free public swim beach is located at Cub Lake. No Lifeguards. The R.V. camp has a swimming beach for campers.
