Army Hands Over Keys to VAAP Site

Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press -- 10/4/00
The Chattanooga Times - Chattanooga Free Press reported that the sale of 940 acres of the 6,350-acre Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant (VAAP) was completed, with the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County jointly taking title from the Federal government for $7.5 million. The site, according to the article, will be used to attract a major firm that can bring substantial job growth to the area. Contamination issues will continue to be addressed on the 940-acre site and on the entire VAAP property, which for decades had produced TNT using numerous chemicals. Under the terms of the transfer, the Federal government remains liable for any contamination that could be identified on the 940 acres subsequent to the sale of the tract.
